Charlie Holmberg at the AF Library

Hey, just a reminder for all of you — you have about 2 weeks to enter to win a copy of  Charlie N. Holmberg’s newest book, The Fifth Doll. I’ve just started it and it’s amazing so far. If you read YA, you’re going to want to get your hands on a copy of this book, and I can help you with that.

Here’s a link to the contest rules:

Reminder, you must be following my blog to win. Good luck!

About the book …. Oops

I just realized that I forgot to tell you about the book! So let me fix that. Here’s what the book is all about!

The bestselling author of The Paper Magician Series transports readers to a darkly whimsical world where strange magic threatens a quiet village that only a courageous woman can save.

Matrona lives in an isolated village, where her life is centered on pleasing her parents. She’s diligent in her chores and has agreed to marry a man of their choosing. But a visit to Slava, the local tradesman, threatens to upend her entire life.

Entering his empty house, Matrona discovers a strange collection of painted nesting dolls—one for every villager. Fascinated, she can’t resist the urge to open the doll with her father’s face. But when her father begins acting strangely, she realizes Slava’s dolls are much more than they seem.

When he learns what she’s done, Slava seizes the opportunity to give Matrona stewardship over the dolls—whether she wants it or not. Forced to open one of her own dolls every three days, she falls deeper into the grim power of Slava’s creations. But nothing can prepare her for the profound secret hiding inside the fifth doll.

Now are you excited? It sounds cool and creepy to me. I can’t wait to read it.

The Fifth Doll!

Ta-Da! I just realized that I sorta spilled the beans a couple weeks ago (oops) so it wasn’t as much of a mystery what the book was as I wanted it to be, but I hope it’s been fun anyway! Here is your big giveaway! All signed by the author, Charlie N. Holmberg, as promised.

So the book signing was lots of fun, mostly friends and family (and me, who is neither), all squeezed into the little American Fork Library. Charlie bubbled around, greeting everyone. There was a table with Matryoshka dolls set up and cool stuff like that. And EVENTUALLY the books showed up.

Anyhow, Charlie was great, the book sounds great, and I snagged a copy to share. First I will give you a brief Q & A I put together based on the event, then I’ll tell you how to win a SIGNED COPY of this awesome book!

Questions and Answers

charlieeditedweb.jpgWhere did you get your inspiration for this book?

I was doing a class for the BYU Worldbuilders thing on magic systems and had an idea for how you can build a magic system around anything, like salt, or thread, or Matroyshka dolls, and then I thought, “Nope, I’m keeping that one.”

Where did you get the name for the main character?

Her name is Matrona, which means woman in Russian and it’s also the root for the Matroyshka dolls, which I thought was really interesting.

How many projects are you working on right now?

About 6 different things.

What book do you wish you had written?

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I love the magic system.

Giveaway Sneak Peak

I’ve mentioned a couple of times that I’m planning to give away a SIGNED COPY
of a new release here on my blog next month. I will be going to the release party to get the book and get it signed by the author. But first, I thought I’d do a little teaser about the book to keep you guessing.

Clue #1: The Genre is Fantasy/Folk Tale.

Clue #2: The author is from Utah.

Clue #3: The author has already written several exciting books.

Final Clue:
33385408 (2)

If you have guessed the book (or the author), you can say so in the comments, but I will neither confirm nor deny anything until it gets a little closer to the signing. In other words, guess away!

What are you reading?

I’ve been sewing more and playing some new games for the Kindle, so I haven’t been reading as much. But now I’m reading an ARC of Lockdown by Laurie R. King about a school shooting. It’s good so far, but I admit I’m kind of nervous about it! I really like her books though, so I’m willing to give it a chance.

I’m also reading Book 2 of the Fitz and the Fool trilogy by Robin Hobb. It’s so good! I love these characters. It’s the end of a long series and I’ve really come to know and love them all. I keep getting anxious and freaked out and having to put it down and do something else. Then I pick it up again. So many feels! Do you ever do that? Maybe it’s just me.

I have several books to review but I was getting a little burned out, so I’m taking a break. Well, I had to finish that LRK book too. Then I’ll get back to reviewing some indie stuff. Oh, and next week I’m getting that book to start MY OWN GIVEAWAY HERE for a SIGNED BOOK. I’m not going to tell you who it’s by yet though. Let me just hint that it’s a Utah author, it’s fantasy, and it’s YA. And it’s coming out in stores this month! Excited yet? I knew you would be!

Contest Reminder!

flatline-no-growth.jpg-1170x824-700x492All that stuff and a bag too! I warned you that I might keep adding to the giveaway, right? Well, here’s the latest. It’s a one of a kind book bag. It’s made of denim with a yellow and pink fringe at the bottom and hot pink webbing straps at the top. It’s just the right size for a couple of hardback books or a book and a bottle of water and your wallet.

Here’s a closeup of the fringe: fringe
