Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week was a freebie topic, so I decided to go with one of my favorite mystery tropes, the locked in – or even better, snowed in mystery. This book involves a small set of characters gathered at a remote location and trapped there by bad weather or unfortunate circumstances. Then one of the party is murdered. You know the killer must be one of them, but who and how? And who else will die before help arrives?
An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena. This one has everything – group of unrelated character stuck at an inn by a blizzard and cut off from the outside. The one of the guests is killed. My first book by this author and I loved it.
The Sittaford Mystery by Agatha Christie. Much like the above book, but throw in a Ouija board and a escaped convict. Also published at Murder at Hazelmoor.
The Affair of the Blood-Stained Egg Cosy by James Anderson. This one is both a very good mystery and a satire of the genre. Might be a little hard to find.
The Corpse in the Snowman by Nicholas Blake. A little dated but good, also a less well known author.
Mum’s the Word by Dorothy Cannell. More of a light Halloween feel that Christmas, and very funny.
Murder Goes Mumming by Alisa Craig. Set at a big Canadian house during Christmas. Who would murder an old lady?
Lament for a Maker by Michael Innes. Set in a creepy house during Christmas. This features multiple narrators and a convoluted plot that will keep you mystified.
Dead Men Don’t Ski by Patricia Moyes. A body in the ski lift leaves plenty of suspects.
The Chinese Shawl by Patricia Wentworth. Many of her books fall into this category, but I like this one a lot. Sweet heiress, spoiled ingenue, big old house, and a body in the pool.
A Most Novel Revenge by Ashley Weaver. On the eve of publishing a tell-all book which will reveal the secrets of an old murder, a killer strikes again. I love this series, and it’s a current one.
Right, that’s 10, so if you’re snowed in this winter, (or relaxing at the beach lol) you have some great ideas for some fun books. Happy reading!
