Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s topic is Character Traits I Love. So here are my 10 picks, in no particular order.
1 – Loyalty. I want a character who will endure and forgive and stick around because they understand those strong bonds. Sevro in Red Rising, Cress in the Lunar Chronicles, Royce & Hadrian in the Ryria books, all show some great loyalty.
2 – Courage. I don’t think courage is just about being physically brave either. I think doing what needs to be done even if it’s hard is also courage. Nita in the Young Wizards series, Neville Longbottom, Percy Jackson – all show some incredible courage.
3 – Sense of Humor. I love the folks that make me laugh! Jasper in Six of Crows, Fred & George Weasely, Hawthorn in Nevermoor, all so much fun. (Side note – why aren’t there more funny girls in fiction? They all seem to be male.)
4 – Book Nerd. Because I identify with this. So much love for Hermione Granger, Shallan in the Stormlight Chronicles, & all those who want to hide in the library and read everything.
5 – Curious. Because I want to know everything too. All those people who stick their noses into everything, who open boxes marked DO NOT OPEN, who poke around in forbidden books (see above), explore dusty attics and damp basements. Yes, because I will be right there with you.
6 – Devoted to family. Again, because this is me. I do understand that not every family is as awesome as mine, but whether it’s a birth family, adopted, or found family, that relationship is so important.
7 – Resourceful. I’m not sure if I fit this category, but I love those folks that can think their way to a solution in any situation. I would like to be more like that.
8 – Charming. Also not me. I mean, my charisma is not at zero, but I sure wish I was one of those honey- tongued, flirty people who can get the attention of the room and have everyone like me. Characters like that are so much fun to read.
9 – Focused. This sounds kind of lame, but someone like Jason Bourne or Evan Smoak who can just tune out pain or noise or distractions and bring their whole attention to the job at hand.
10. Underdog. I love rooting for the underdog, whether it’s Darrow or the crew of the Brotherband or Katniss, anyone who has the odds against them. I always want them to win against the privileged set.
Right, there’s my picks. Here are a few of the books I referenced.
